FORMER Labour Cabinet member for transport Brian Lodge is right to point out that the Lib Dems have not delivered on their promise to sort out the city's most unpopular roads bottleneck, at Bradfield Road, Hillsborough.
With a great fanfare, the new administration made a promise which, frankly, they could not keep when they carried out a survey to find out which bottleneck was driving city motorists most crazy and saying they would sort it ought without delay.

Bu
t Coun Lodge's criticism is little more than an exercise in Yah-Boo politics. From his time in charge of the city's transport network, he knows that change is never just around the corner.

Transport arrangements are notoriously complex and hidebound in paperwork behind the scenes.

But at least motorists have someone in the town hall who seems to be eager to get the city traffic moving once more, rather than drive it down ever narrower dead ends.

Government must help all in crisis

OUR region has suffered a significant blow from the economic downturn. For figures out today show unemployment has risen by a worrying 30 per cent.

And that is only those on Job Seeker Allowances and not people who are out of work but are on various schemes or in receipt of different benefits.

But you don't have to be a statistical wizard to work out that thousands of families in this part of Britain are facing a huge crisis and urgent and decisive Government action is needed to protect their well being.

The city's chamber of commerce continues to be bullish, suggesting that the region's businesses enjoy a strong position to make the most of the upturn, when it comes. And it encourages employers to continue to play a positive role within communities while at the same time continuing continue to invest in training and development.

But the real driver for survival is the Government. They must present a sustainable package to help those most in need, ranging from low paid individuals to struggling firms.
