THERE has never been much love lost between Sheffield and Leeds. And the animosity is about to become far worse.
Our northern neighbours are planning a rival arena which may well poach business from Sheffield Arena.

To add insult, it has also been learned that taxpayers' money will be used to support the project. And rubbing further salt into this festering
wound is the fact that this money comes from an organisation which is supposed to help the whole region's economy, Yorkshire Forward.

There is also an annoying element of pretence in the air, suggesting that the Leeds arena will have a 'unique super theatre format', concentrating on entertainment rather than sport, according to Yorkshire Forward.

That kind of bunkum simply does not carry any merit in this part of the world where we know only too well that facilities of this nature have to be hugely adaptable to cash in on the extensive range of events which need this kind of building. Otherwise they simply don't pay their way.

An arena in Leeds would be a rival to ours, with competition can only be damaging. It is not Yorkshire Forward's role to stick the knife into one Yorkshire city on behalf of another.

Make sure new boys deliver promises

SHEFFIELD City Council is eager to point out that it has not sacked Liberata, the private company which has been managing much of its financial work for the last 10 years.

But as bosses from that organisation begin to pack their bags and leave in favour of rival firm Capita Group Plc, we are sure they will feel they have been given their marching orders.

Liberata's relationship with Sheffield council has been troubled at best with failures leading to people going without housing benefits.

Today the city council embarks on a new relationship with a new contractor. But we hope they have learned some old lessons and can ensure that their next partner will deliver the services they have promised during the bidding process.

Leeds were making investments while sheffield were wasting money on projects like the world student games.
It enjoyed its economic boom bringing more investments outside of london for example the first harvey nichols store, banking etc.It also has an airport which brings in business people were as the one in sheffield closed down,I think new investments change people and give them something to live for where as sheffield council dont seem to know what to do.

"competition can only be damaging".

Is that a serious comment? If the writer wants to consider anything as "bunkum" it's ridiculous statements like this.

And what is Yorkshire Forward's role if it's not to support development projects in the region? Everyone one of which will have competition somewhere.

This is just bellyaching nonsense from a spectacularly ignorant left-wing position and bordering on childish. If Sheffield Arena loses out it's because it's not good enough - it's management will have to raise it's game!

The arena location in Sheffield was all all about regenerating a run-down area which I beleive it has done successfully.

Why cant the Leeds council be more creative in their thinking and come up with something else rather than setting up in competition with a neighbour.

They could always build an amusement park - or do they already have one in Leeds United!!

The Sheffield Arena is a depressing toilet of a place which is badly run & with terrible atmosphere & acoustics.
I'm very proud to to be a "Sheffielder" but let's face it the Arena is nothing to be proud of.
Anything that may result in this venue improving has got to be a good thing.
So we may not have as many Westlife / X-Factor / Disney-on-ice tours in Sheffield - I'm not sure how I'm going to get to sleep tonight!

Nothing wrong with the Sheffield Arena apart from the following -
1. Most seats are miles from the stage.
2. The sound system is terrible.
3. Events are disgracefully overpriced.
4. After queueing for a half-hour, it costs an arm and a leg for a pint.
5. Despite being nowhere near the centre of Sheffield, it still costs a fiver to park the car.
6. The attitude of the staff leaves much to be desired.

I stopped bothering with the place years ago. Try going to the City Hall or Manchester's Bridgwater Hall if you want to see music in better surroundings, whatever your musical tastes.
And if the new Leeds' Arena ticks all the boxes that the Sheffield Arena doesn't, I wouldn't hesitate to go 40 mins. up the M1.

With Liberata going does this mean I will get my £2723 back or will the council just draw a line under my money?

Oh dear god another city is planning on building a venue like the Sheffield arena oh no however will the city cope. The next thing you know they will want a decent football team (sorry but any chance to have a dig at Leeds utd league one must be taken)! If the people who run Sheffield arena cant handle the competition maybe they should pack up and let someone else run it or maybe it's because the developers and potential management in Leeds could come to Sheffield and look at how not to build an arena or how not to overcharge everything inside. At the end of the day if Leeds council think an arena like the one in Sheffield can improve the city maybe its up to the people who run Sheffield arena to prove that ours is the place to put on a show and for people to come and see the best shows available.

Leeds look to be off to a good start with the new site for this venture it will be an absolute nightmare for any body travelling by car and hoping to park it as well. It really will cause some problems in the surrounding areas. Venues like these should be on the very outskirts of towns and cities. Our own Arena has traffic problems but this one should easily beat it and put people off going unless they want to allow a couple of days for a return journey and go on the bus.
