FORMER Sheffield United trialist Ian Harte had second thoughts about joining Charlton earlier this week after initially agreeing a two-month contract.
The 31-year-old left-back was expected to sign on Tuesday morning only to withdraw from the deal.
Harte had been earmarked to become Alan Pardew's second signing in 24 hours following the loan capture of 18-year-old Sunderland striker Martyn Waghorn.
His decision represents another bitter disappointment for the beleagured Charlton manager whose team have slumped to 20th in the table after a run of seven games without a win.
Waghorn has made just one appearance for the Wearsiders this season, when he played the first-half of their 5-0 defeat by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Pardew, however, has also taken steps to ensure the more experienced members of his squad are aware of their responsibilities.
"I've been tougher on the players because they needed to be toughened up," he said. "There are players here who needed to be shaken.
"I've changed the type of sessions we were doing and we're focusing on the type of formation we're playing now rather than the two formations we were switching between before.
"The players are doing more hours and coming in every day, which they will continue to do until I feel we've turned the situation around."
