Exclusive: Izzy Brown discussing his Chelsea and Sheffield Wednesday future ahead of crucial six months

Brown joined the Owls on loan from the Blues at the start of the season, being snapped up by Garry Monk as the former Wednesday boss sought to build a squad capable of overturning their points deficit and staying up. The 23-year-old started well at Hillsborough, enjoying a strong opening to life in Sheffield, but then an injury and the firing of Monk set him back a few paces. Now, after a difficult spell under Tony Pulis, Brown is eager to get himself back into the mix under the tutelage of Neil Thompson. Brown has made a key pass every 48 minutes in the Championship so far this season, the best record of any Wednesday player and inside the top 20 in the league when compared to those with the same amount of appearances or more. He’ll be hoping to improve that tally even further in the coming months, and he admits that it’s a crucial spell for him as a footballer as he draws closer to the expiration of his deal at Stamford Bridge. He told The Star, “It’s up at the end of the season, and they’ve got a two-year option I think. Honestly, I have no clue about what’s going on the future. Everything is undecided because of Coronavirus, and everything just depends on how the rest of this season goes. “There’s a lot on the line for me, but I just want to focus on Sheffield Wednesday and play and do the best I can for this club. I’ll worry about my future when the season has finished.” So for now he’s focused on finishing the season strongly and making sure the Owls stay in the Championship, but would he consider a permanent return to Hillsborough if the opportunity arose in July? “100%,” he says. “I’ve had this conversation with my mum to be fair… I feel like I’m a bit of a northern boy now because I’ve been up here quite a bit. And this club is a perfect fit for me, I love where I live, I know the boys and get on with them. And when the fans are back at Hillsborough it’s an unbelievable club. “So it’d be great for me to play here permanently, but you never know what people will do. But I’d definitely consider signing permanently here, yeah.” Brown and his teammates are back in training with Wednesday and could well be in contention for this weekend’s FA Cup clash with Everton at Goodison Park – he’ll be hoping that he’s done enough to show ‘Thommo’ that he should be part of their attempts to grab a Premier League scalp on Sunday. After seven different loan spells in the last six seasons, the time will come soon for him to make a big decision for his career - the question remains, however, exactly where the talented midfielder will end up.
