FLOODING hit homes and businesses and closed roads across the county after hours of persistent rain.
Firefighters pumped out Newton Grange old people's home on Horner Close, Stocksbridge, at 3am today.

The Cock Inn pub on Bridge Hill, Oughtibridge, was hit by two feet of water in the cellar and also had to be pumped out, as did a house on Wadsley
Lane, Hillsborough. A fire spokesman said officers were called to Mill Road in Ecclesfield at 2am when Blackburn Brook burst its banks, and were called back an hour later when a nearby house was nearly inundated.

Police reported a stuck lorry on the A61 at Burncross after flood water washed away the road surface. And council workers were called out to issue sandbags on Main Road, Darnall, at its junction with Handsworth Grange Road, and to Deerlands Avenue, Parson Cross, at the junction with Barnsley Road. Other roads affected included the exit slip roads at junction 36 of the M1, Penistone Road in High Green, Bocking Lane at Abbeydale and Chesterfield Road, Meersbrook, as well as Bawtry Road in Brinsworth, Rotherham.

A fire spokesman said they had taken a number of calls from people requesting sandbags which were forwarded to Sheffield Council.

Forecasters predicted another very wet day today with torrential downpours and possible thunderstorms this afternoon. Tony Conlan from the Meteogroup UK added: "It won't be a great day tomorrow either. There will be a fair amount of cloud and a scattering of showers although they won't be as heavy as today."

He said Monday would provide a "temporary dry interlude" before more rain, wind and cloud swept South Yorkshire again from Tuesday.

The Environment Agency said it is working closely with the Met Office to ensure residents and businesses are given flood warnings if necessary as soon as possible.

"We are making our normal preparations for possible flooding, and urge the public to do the same by checking any flood warnings through our website or Floodline," said regional director Mark Sitton-Kent.
