Shoppers may be wondering why Meadowhall sported a striking red hue on the Sheffield skyline over the weekend.

As the start of the lunar calendar ushers in this year's animal zodiac, the shopping centre’s lights shone red in celebration of the Chinese New Year.

The display, which ran over the weekend, honoured the Year of the Rat.

In Chinese culture, rats were seen as a sign of wealth and surplus.

Tonight, Sheffield City Hall played host to the celebrations- with acrobatics, dancing and singing.
